The adoption process involves many steps; however, we can help you prepare and provide the guidance needed throughout the course of your journey towards a newly-created family.

Adoption Basics in Alabama

Both married and single adults can adopt a child in Alabama and the state does not restrict adoptions for same-sex couples. As a hopeful adoptive parent, your age or the fact that you work outside the home cannot act as sole reasons to deny your dream to adopt.

Many types of adoptions are available, such as:

  • International adoptions

  • Domestic adoptions

  • Foster care adoptions

  • Stepparent or relative adoptions

  • Adult adoptions

  • Private or independent adoptions

In the case of adopting a foster child through the Department of Human Resources, certain qualifications are required. You much be 19 years old or more. If married, you must have been so for at least three years and at least one of you must be a U.S. citizen.

In all cases of adoption, you must generally be of good health in order to take care of a child, must have sufficient finances and housing, and pass a routine background check. These requirements are part of a home study process which also can involve visits to your home to ensure that the environment will be safe for a child. Additional requirements may apply depending on the agency you work with or type of adoption you seek.
