What Are Felonies in Alabama?
When it comes to misdemeanors and felonies, felony offenses are considered the more serious between the two. There are four types of felonies in Alabama: Class A, Class B, Class C, and Class D felonies.
The following is a breakdown of the four types of felonies in the state:
Class A felonies – Punishable by 10 years up to 99 years or life in prison with fines up to $60,000; examples include murder, kidnapping, arson, robbery
Class B felonies – Punishable by two up to 20 years in jail with fines up to $30,000; examples include drug distribution, manslaughter, assault, and rape
Class C felonies – Punishable by two up to 10 years in jail with fines up to $15,000; examples include sexual abuse, bribery, possession of controlled substances, weapons charges
Class D felonies – The least serious as in simple possession of a controlled substance, punishable by more than one year up to five years of incarceration and/or a fine of up to $7,500
